Directors Maya Forbes & Wallace Wolodarsky discuss The Good House

October 1, 2022 A DGA Membership Screening Q&A in Los Angeles

A New England realtor’s life begins to unravel when she hooks up with an old flame from New York in Directors Maya Forbes & Wallace Wolodarsky’s comedic-drama, The Good House.

Forbes & Wolodarsky’s film tells the story of Hildy Good (Sigourney Weaver), a descendant of the Salem witches whose compartmentalized life begins to unravel as she rekindles a romance with her old high-school flame, Frank Getchell (Kevin Kline), and their reckless behavior ignites long-buried emotions and family secrets.

On October 1, after the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles, Forbes & Wolodarsky discussed the making of The Good House during a Q&A moderated by Director Susannah Grant (Lonely Planet).

During the conversation, the duo spoke about aligning tastes and styles as co-directors.

“We both wanted to do one thing for sure, telling the story of an older woman who had so much agency fighting to stay relevant,” said Forbes. “This was all very appealing to us.”

Wolodarsky continued, “From the writer's perspective, in the book we have an unreliable narrator and that is a dynamic place to start and we both responded to that very quickly. For us as co-directors, characters trumps over everything and you start to build from there.”

In addition to The Good House, Forbes’s directorial credits include the features The Polka King and Infinitely Polar Bear and Wolodarsky’s include the features Seeing Other People, Sorority Boys and Coldblooded.

Wolodarsky has been a DGA member since 1994 and Forbes has been a DGA member since 2016.
