Director Sofia Coppola discusses On the Rocks

January 13, 2021 A DGA Virtual Q&A

A young novelist and her larger-than-life playboy father reconnect on a surveillance mission in Director Sofia Coppola’s comedic-drama, On the Rocks.

Coppola reteams with her Lost in Translation star Bill Murray in this tale of a wealthy and charming art dealer (Murray), who entices his recently-married writer daughter (Rashida Jones) into investigating her suspiciously acting husband (Marlon Wayans), to discover if he is having an affair.

In a DGA Virtual Q&A Program Event on January 13, Coppola discussed the making of On the Rocks in an online conversation moderated by Director Alexander Payne (Downsizing).

One of the subjects Coppola discussed was her collaboration with her Production Designer on the film, Anne Ross.

“Because it’s contemporary New York, we spent a lot of time before just talking about the feeling,” said Coppola. “We wanted it to be a little aspirational and romantic idea of New York but still rooted enough in reality…I always want it to feel relatable. We spent a lot of time before shooting looking at references together and started to fill our world and make boards we could share with the costume designer and director of photography, so we’re all on the same page.”

In addition to On the Rocks, Coppola’s directorial credits include the feature films The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere, The Bling Ring, La Traviata and The Beguiled. She was nominated for DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures for her 2003 feature, Lost in Translation; and for the 2015 DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Specials for her work on A Very Murray Christmas. Coppola has been a DGA member since 2000.
