Director Paul Thomas Anderson discusses Phantom Thread

December 13, 2017 DGA Q&As in Los Angeles and New York

A renowned dressmaker finds his carefully-tailored life disrupted by love in Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s new drama, Phantom Thread.

Anderson’s film tells the story of Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis), a man who sits at the center of British fashion in 1950s post-war London, dressing everyone from royalty to movie stars with his distinct style. His status as a confirmed bachelor is upended after he meets Alma (Vicky Krieps), a young, strong-willed woman, who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover.

Following the DGA membership screening in Los Angeles on December 2, Anderson sat down with Director Rian Johnson (Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi) to discuss the making of Phantom Thread. Anderson also discussed the film in a conversation moderated by Director Richard LaGravenese (Beautiful Creatures) following the DGA membership screening in New York on December 13.

In addition to Phantom Thread, Anderson’s credits include the feature films Inherent Vice, The Master, Punch-Drunk Love, Magnolia, Boogie Nights and Hard Eight. Anderson was nominated for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film and the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Directing for his 2007 feature There Will Be Blood. He has been a DGA member since 1996.
