Mike Binder: Black or White

December 12, 2014 A DGA Q&A in Los Angeles

A grieving widower is drawn into a custody battle over his biracial granddaughter in Director Mike Binder’s new drama Black or White.

In the film, Elliot Anderson (Kevin Costner) is a Caucasian grandfather left with the sole care of his beloved biracial granddaughter Eloise following the tragic death of his wife. As he struggles with his grief, Elliot’s world is turned upside-down when Eloise’s African American paternal grandmother Rowena (Octavia Spencer) seeks custody of the child he has raised since childbirth. A legal battle ensues that forces both families to confront their true feelings on race, forgiveness and understanding.

Following the DGA screening in Los Angeles on December 12, Binder spoke about the making of Black or White in a conversation with Director Kevin Costner (Open Range) who also stars in the film.

In addition to Black or White, Binder’s filmography includes the feature films Reign Over Me, The Upside of Anger, The Sex Monster and Indian Summer; and episodes of the television series The Mind of the Married Man and American Gothic.

Binder has been a DGA member since 1993.
