Cover sets are handy during unpredictable weather, but sometimes they're useful on a clear day. "We were shooting the Warrior Falls set for a few days and it was gorgeous outside," recalls 1st AD Lisa C. Satriano during production of Ryan Coogler's Black Panther. "Two of the actors started complaining about their vision. It turns out they were standing at an angle where the lights were reflecting through the water and into their eyes."
The actors were safely taken off set, but because they had key roles in the scene, Satriano had to get creative. "There were [cover sets] that we could go to," she says, "I had to assess each one."
Satriano knew she was on the clock. "It was kind of a big deal because Warrior Falls was three-to-four hours of one kind of makeup for the actors and we had to move all of the equipment inside," says Satriano. "Luckily, we had the right actors around to shoot another scene."
The shoot went indoors and the production was back on schedule. "The unforeseen sometimes happens," says Satriano. "You've got to have things in your back pocket at all times."
