DGA Statement Regarding Copyright Alerts System

July 07, 2011

“The DGA was very pleased to hear today about the announcement of the new Copyright Alerts system which will help Internet subscribers learn and understand when their Internet accounts are potentially being misused for digital content theft,” said Jay D. Roth, National Executive Director of the Directors Guild of America.

“The works created by our members reflect and illuminate our culture, and are the result of their talent and creativity, as well as a great deal of hard work that is often years in the making. They represent real jobs, not only to our members but to those they collaborate with on set and hundreds of thousands of people whose livelihoods are dependent on the economic health of our business.  Moreover, this is often the very content that drives people to Internet viewing in the first place. That is why we take so seriously the importance of protecting these works against illegal online theft. The voluntary Copyright Alert system represents a first-time collaborative effort that holds the promise of directly engaging the consumer in their own ‘right to know’ via informational alerts.  We believe this has the potential to open new lines of communication with consumers that will directly impact the fight against Internet theft.”
