Statement From Directors Guild President Jack Shea on the Tentative Contract Agreement Between the WGA and AMPTP

May 04, 2001

“The Directors Guild congratulates the WGA and AMPTP on reaching a tentative agreement, thus avoiding the terrible economic repercussions a strike would have had on our industry, its employees and their families, and on the City of Los Angeles.

“The DGA and its members are also proud of our role in drafting sensible proposals related to the writer-director collaboration and possessory credit issues. The DGA’s Creative Rights Committee and more than 170 feature film directors worked hard to develop these preferred practices over the last year, beginning months before the WGA and AMPTP sat down at the negotiating table. We felt strongly that creative relationships should not be mandated, and are glad that those involved in the negotiations concurred. The new set of preferred practices should contribute meaningfully to improving writer-director relationships.

“Our director members remain committed to working with their writer collaborators in the days, weeks and months ahead to continue to improve the filmmaking process.”
