DGA Statement on the Break Off of Contract Talks Between the WGA and AMPTP

March 01, 2001

We are extremely disappointed that the talks between the Writers Guild and the AMPTP have broken off.

The DGA has not had a place at the negotiating table. In fact, our contract does not come up until next year. Nevertheless, in an attempt to collaboratively address credit and participation issues in our industry, the DGA’s leadership, along with our Creative Rights Committee and 150 of our Director members, worked for nearly one year to produce a thoughtful set of recommendations. Having failed in our efforts to discuss these proposals directly with the WGA, we shared them with the AMPTP at its request.

We have been clear that any proposals must preserve the integrity of the filmmaking process as well as the creative and managing roles of the director. We believe that the DGA proposals give negotiators the framework to make substantial forward strides on credit and participation issues.

We hope all parties will return quickly to the difficult task at hand and make the strongest effort possible to avert a costly strike for their members and for all Southern Californians.
