The DGA is launching the second year of its highly successful "Directors Finder" independent screening series on Friday, May 5, 2000, DGA President Jack Shea announced today. The Directors Finder series showcases unreleased films that were made under DGA contracts and have not yet secured distribution in the United States.
Seven films that were shown in the first year of the series secured distribution following their screenings.
"The "Directors Finder" series gives our members who work in the important arena of independent film a chance to share their vision," said DGA President Jack Shea. "Based on last year’s enthusiastic response, we hope that showing these pictures to our membership and to industry representatives will help get the films the exposure they need in order to get them distributed."
All films to be shown as part of the Friday afternoon screening series were submitted to the DGA by their director and selected by lottery. Because the cost of the screenings is borne by the DGA, films produced by established companies with the means to pay for such screenings are excluded from participation. The director of each film may invite distributors, agents and other industry reps to the screening, and the Guild makes a designated number of seats available to its membership and announces the screenings of these films in its monthly calendar.
The series is the brainchild of the DGA’s Independent Directors Committee, whose members include indie film stalwarts such as Allison Anders, Charles Burnett, George Hickenlooper, Leon Ichaso, Mary Lambert, Steven Soderbergh, Penelope Spheeris and Gary Walkow.
The Friday afternoon screenings will be in Theatre 2, the first at 1:00 pm and the second at 3:00 pm.
The following screening slots were given out on a lottery basis:
May 5th:
1pm: 4 FACES, directed by Ted Post
3pm: Spanish Judges, directed by Oz Scott
May 12th:
1pm: Blasphemy, directed by John Mendoza
3pm: Old Man River, directed by Allan Holzman
More films will be screened in June and July; however, dates and titles are not confirmed at press time.
