Statement from DGA President Jack Shea on June 18 DGA Meeting with Jack Valenti Regarding Violence and Responsibility

June 22, 1999

"The DGA had a very informative and productive meeting with Jack Valenti on the issue of violence and responsibility," Directors Guild of America President Jack Shea said. "Mr. Valenti was very receptive to our concerns, and I am sure that we will work closely in the upcoming months to ensure that our members' First Amendment rights are protected from unwarranted and unconstitutional government intrusion."

"We confirmed to Mr. Valenti that the DGA intends to be prominent in the deliberations on the role of movies and television in shaping America's culture," Shea commented. "We believe in the rights guaranteed by the American Constitution. It is the job of the Guild to protect and defend the First Amendment and avoid government intrusion on directors' rights. Equally, we feel there are legitimate issues of community and social responsibility for audio-visual works. We feel this is an important issue for the Guild and its members to address and examine collectively and individually."
