Directors Guild of America Recommends Economic Terms of New Contract

January 21, 1999

The Directors Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers announced today that they have concluded a tentative agreement on the economic terms of a new three year collective bargaining agreement. Details of the new agreement will be reported to the Guild’s National Board this Saturday, January 23.

With the current agreement set to expire on June 30, separate talks are still negotiating the only remaining issues, involving the creative rights of directors.

"This is a good deal for DGA members and for the industry," commented DGA Economics Negotiating Committee chairman Dan Petrie, Sr. "Both sides worked very hard late into the night to resolve our differences, and the result is an economic agreement that we will be able to recommend for ratification to the DGA National Board and membership upon conclusion of the creative rights negotiations."

The parties met several times before the holidays, but began negotiations in earnest two weeks ago, meeting until 2:30 AM last Thursday. The agreement was reached at 9:30 pm on Friday evening, January 15.

"We are thrilled to be able to reach an early agreement and avoid the prospect of a damaging production slowdown that would result due to the threat of a strike," commented DGA President Jack Shea. "I commend the efforts of our dedicated chairman Dan Petrie and all the Guild members who served on the negotiating committee as well as all of our hardworking staff, in particular our exceptionally talented National Executive Director, Jay D. Roth."

The membership of the DGA will vote upon ratification following consideration by the DGA National Board and resolution of creative rights issues.
