The Directors Guild of America mourns the loss of veteran Associate Director Judith (Judy) Farinet.
A DGA member since 1973, Farinet was first elected to the Eastern AD/SM/PA Council in 2012. For an additional five terms, she served as a member or alternate on the Council and was a member of five DGA Network Negotiating Committees from 2008-2020.
Farinet got into news as a Unit Manager’s secretary on NBC’s flagship news program, The Huntley-Brinkley Report. After falling in love with live production, she began working as a PA then as an AD, where she worked on a range of programs from political conventions, to live musical productions. Known for her AD work on the NBC Nightly News and Dateline, her resume also includes working as a Director on the NBC Nightly News weekend editions, Dateline and breaking news specials.
In a 2006 DGA Quarterly interview, Farinet shared her love of the action in the control room saying, “I really love being in the middle of where things are happening. We’re seeing it all unfold and putting it on the air for everyone. I get a rush sometimes from knowing that we’re in the hub of things that are making history or affecting the nation and the world.”
