On January 9, 2009, the DGA announced the Guild's nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentaries for the year 2008.
The winners will be announced at the 61st Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

This is Mr. Gilbert's third DGA Award nomination. In 1998, he won the DGA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Documentary for Vietnam: Long Time Coming (along with Jerry Blumenthal and Gordon Quinn); and was nominated in the Children's Programs category for A Time For Dancing in 2003. This is Mr. James' second DGA Award nomination. In 1994, he won the DGA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Documentary for Hoop Dreams.
