Student Director Mira Lew of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is this year's recipient of the John Frankenheimer Memorial Fellowship.
Named for the late DGA Vice President, the Fellowship was established in 2003 by the Guild and John's wife, Evans Frankenheimer, and is awarded to a graduate student majoring in film directing chosen by the directing faculty on the basis of artistic merit. The student receives $5000.
"I would like to thank the Guild and Mrs. Evans Frankenheimer for their commitment to supporting student filmmakers," said Ms. Lew. "I hope to honor John Frankenheimer's legacy of American filmmaking - one which combined a humanistic social vision and spectacular technique. His ability to elicit great performances, his command of a set and his refusal to compromise his vision continue to inspire me in my filmmaking journey."
The Frankenheimer Fellowship alternates annually between the Schools of Theater, Film & Television of both UCLA and the University of Southern California (USC).
