Director Don Scardino discusses A Break in the Rain

A deeply wounded man finds a path towards healing in Director Don Scardino’s drama, A Break in the Rain.

Scardino’s film tells the story of Jake Watson, a widower who has been on the road ever since his wife died of cancer. Ten years later, after his son dies of the same disease, he returns home to help support his daughter-in-law. After he takes a job driving for a friend’s limo service, he meets Nashville singer Catriona Walsh who ultimately changes his life during a two-week musical road trip.

On September 27, after the DGA membership screening in New York, Scardino discussed the making of A Break in the Rain during a Q&A moderated by DGA National Vice President Laura Belsey (The Hunting Party).

During the conversation, Scardino revealed that he was able to make the film by utilizing one of the DGA's Low Budget Agreements.

“Well thanks to the DGA, they made a special kind of tier for us for us to do it. It's that low, low, low tier. And we just insisted on paying the actors SAG-AFTRA scale and I gave them all points in the movie if it ever makes any money back. You know how hard that is. But you know we just managed to make it that way. But what I will say is all of the unions are open to cutting deals and making it work so they can spur film making activity in New York state — it was all made in and around New Paultz. It’s another reason we could make it for the money we made it for.”

Scardino’s other directorial credits include the feature films Our Almost Completely True Story and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone; the movies for television The Bitch Who Stole Christmas, I Mom So Hard and The Kicker; and episodes of The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, New Amsterdam, Only Murders in the Building, The Conners, Murphy Brown, Young Sheldon, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, 2 Broke Girls, Royal Pains and Law & Order. He is a four-time DGA Award nominee: twice in the Comedy series category for episodes of 30 Rock and twice in the Musical/Variety category for episodes of Tracey Takes On...

Scardino has been a DGA member since 1986 and has served as a member of the Eastern Directors Council and on the DGA Negotiating Committee.
