Meet the Nominees: Documentary

On February 3, DGA members assembled online for the 2026 edition of the Meet the Nominees: Documentary event. Following an introduction from DGA Documentary Committee Co-Chair Marina Zenovich and screenings of clips from the nominated films, the nominated Directors — Mstyslav Chernov (2000 Meters to Andriivka), Geeta Gandbhir (The Perfect Neighbor), Sara Khaki & Mohammadreza Eyni (Cutting Through Rocks), Elizabeth Lo (Mistress Dispeller), and Laura Poitras & Mark Obenhaus (Cover-Up) — engaged in an insightful dialogue around their projects in a conversation moderated by Director W. Kamau Bell.

Chernov’s directorial credits include the DGA Award-winning documentary, 20 Days in Mariupol and an episode of the series, Frontline.

 

Geeta GandbhirGeeta Gandbhir

The Perfect Neighbor

Gandbhir’s directorial credits include the feature-length documentaries Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power, Hungry to Learn, I Am Evidence and A Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers; and episodes of the documentary series Katrina: Come Hell and High Water, Eyes on the Prize III: We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest, Through Our Eyes, Born in Synanon, Black and Missing and Why We Hate . Gandbhir has been a DGA member since 2016 and serves as a member of the DGA Documentary Committee. ;

 

Sara Khaki Mohammadreza EyniSara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni

Cutting Through Rocks

Khaki and Eyni’s directorial credits the short documentary Our Iranian Lockdown; episodes of The Guardian: Documentaries; and were among the co-directing contributors to the film, Convergence: Courage in a Crisis.

Mistress Dispeller

Lo’s directorial credits include the feature documentary Stray; and the shorts, Girls Got Game, American Wildlife, Mother's Day, The Disclosure President, Notes from Buena Vista and Last Stop in Santa Rosa.

 

Laura Poitras Mark ObenhausLaura Poitras & Mark Obenhaus

Cover-Up

Poitras’directorial credits include the DGA Award-nominated documentary, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, the Academy Award-nominated Pulitzer Prize-winning documentary, My Country, My Country and the Oscar and DGA Award-winning film, Citizenfour. Poitras has been a DGA member since 2024.

Obenhaus’ directorial credits include the documentaries Steep, Dreamland, The Kennedy Assassination: Beyond Conspiracy and UFOs: Seeing Is Believing ; and episodes of Frontline and  The Age of Aerospace. Obenhaus has been a DGA member since 1986.
