Translating Feeling into Frame

Translating Feeling into Frame - A conversation with DP Takuro Ishizaka

The Latino Committee’s (LC) November meeting featured the discussion, Translating Feeling into Frame - A conversation with DP Takuro Ishizaka.

During the dialogue moderated by LC Co-Chair Alejandro Brugués, Ishizaka, who served as the DP on Hikari’s feature Rental Family, revealed how a Director’s instinct becomes the image that defines a scene. Covering aspects from lighting and lenses to blocking and visual rhythm, the conversation looked at the craft behind shaping tone and emotion and how a shared vocabulary between the Director and DP can unlock clearer, stronger collaborations on set.

Ishizaka noted that DPs often have to make quick decisions on set, so learning what a Director likes, how they like their actors to move, and understanding their vision for what a scene should communicate visually, are vital to inform these decisions and how to frame each shot.

Ishizaka’s other cinematographer credits include features such as Hong-Seung Yoon’s Knuckle Girl, Takahiro Miki’s Tang, Keishi Otomo’s Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter Part II - The Beginning and Bernard Rose’s upcoming Lear Rex.
