120 golfers took to the links of the Wilshire Country Club on Monday, June 29 to show their generosity while having a great day at the Directors Guild Foundation (DGF) Carl Weathers Memorial Golf Tournament. The event — which was renamed two years ago to pay tribute to esteemed DGA member and DGF officer — was a fundraiser created to benefit the Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting DGA members facing difficult times.
After opening the post tournament banquet with a few words about Weathers, DGF Chair Todd Holland, thanked all the players for their participation and took a moment to honor the memory of the much-beloved former Foundation trustee and DGA golfer James Burrows.
“Quite simply put, our Guild has lost a legend,” said Holland. “But what we are recognizing him for tonight is his valued service as trustee of the Directors Guild Foundation for more than 25 years. Jim was also a passionate golfer and is the single largest donor to this tournament since its inception. He was a generous colleague, an incredible mentor to so many directors, and he felt passionate about ensuring that DGA members were protected from financial hardship. His impact will be forever cherished and appreciated. I’d like us all to raise a glass to celebrate Jim’s remarkable spirit.”
Holland then made a special acknowledgement to one of the event’s founders and its driving force for the past 29 years, former DGA National Executive Director Jay D. Roth, who also serves as a co-chair of the tournament alongside DGF Assistant Secretary, Director Michael Zinberg.
“Jay’s commitment to the Foundation is unparalleled, fostering invaluable relationships with our sponsors and members over the years to ensure the success of this event. We are truly grateful for his tireless efforts.”
Turning his attention to the nearly eight-decade mission of the DGF, Holland spoke about its rich history of helping DGA members in crisis as well as supporting the entertainment community through contributions to the MPTF and the Entertainment Community Fund and the Los Angeles and New York Health Fairs hosted by the DGA and the DGA-Producer Pension and Health Plans. “This vital work by the Foundation could not continue without your support today. I am proud to announce that- due to your generosity and support of today’s Tournaments, more than $100,000 net revenue has been raised today to benefit the Foundation’s programs. On behalf of the Foundation Board, and the many DGA members and their families the Foundation has assisted over the years, we thank you.”
After thanking the sponsors and declaring the raffle prize winners, Holland turned the proceedings over to Zinberg who announced the winners and congratulated them on their bragging rights before adding his heartfelt thank you on behalf of the Foundation and bidding everyone good night.
