From Guest Director to Pilot Director

On February 23, the African American Steering Committee meeting featured the in-depth discussion, From Guest Director to Pilot Director. During a conversation moderated by Committee Co-Chair Pete Chatmon, Directors Anthony Hemingway and Nzingha Stewart shared information about their journey to the pilot Director’s chair tips on how they worked their way up from other assignments to landing the unique opportunity to visualize an entire world for audiences to experience.

Anthony HemingwayDirector Anthony Hemingway

In addition to his work on the pilots of Boston Blue, True Lies and Power, since making the jump from Assistant Directing to Director, Hemingway’s directorial credits include the feature Red Tails; the movies for television Murder and New York Undercover; and episodes of National Parks, Genius: Aretha, Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G., Major Crimes, Shameless, The Newsroom, Treme, True Blood, CSI: NY, The Closer, ER The Wire and the Power spin-offs, Power Book II: Ghost and Power Book IV: Force. Hemingway has been a DGA member since 1995 and has served as an alternate on the National Board. He is also a member of the DGA Diversity Task Force and has served as an alternate on the Eastern AD/UPM Council and the Television Creative Rights Committee.

In addition to her  work on the pilots of The ‘Burbs, We Were Liars, From Scratch and Cross, Stewart’s directorial credits include the feature Tall Girl; the movies for television Love by the 10th Date and With This Ring; and episodes of Inventing Anna, Maid, Little Fires Everywhere, A Million Little Things, Station 19, For The People, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Major Crimes, How to Get Away with Murder and Pretty Little Liars. She was nominated for the 2023 DGA Award for Movies for Television & Limited Series for her Daisy Jones & The Six episode “Track 10: Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide.” Stewart has been a DGA member since 2013.

Chatmon’s directorial credits include the feature Premium; the documentary 761st; and episodes of Ghosts, High Potential, Reasonable Doubt, YouThe Flight Attendant, Insecure, Silicon Valley, Love Life, Interior Chinatown, UnPrisoned, You, Grey’s Anatomy, Black-ish, Blindspotting, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Mythic Quest. He has been a DGA member since 2017 and serves as a co-chair of the African American Steering Committee.

 


About the African American Steering Committee:

The African American Steering Committee (AASC) was born of a desire to address the specific needs of the African-American members of the Directors Guild. One of the primary goals of the Committee is to establish a productive line of communication between African-American members and the creative community. The Committee meets monthly to plan events throughout the year celebrating the achievements of African-Americans, as well as forums with industry executives to proactively address what can be done to hire more African-Americans.
