Perpetuating or Intervening? Your Role in Industry Harassment Culture

DGA members can hold unique power in shaping workplace culture and leadership decisions can unintentionally perpetuate harm – or actively disrupt it.

On July 26, DGA members were able to log online for the special bystander intervention training event, Perpetuating or Intervening? Your Role in Industry Harassment Culture. Presented by the DGA Diversity Department as a part of the Guild’s commitment to creating harassment-free sets through fostering a culture of equity and inclusion, the event was designed to challenge the participants to examine how their day-to-day decisions shape workplace dynamics.

During the training session led by Aletheia Consulting Founder and Principal Consultant Tashmica Torok, rather than centering punitive responses or relying solely on HR intervention, the event sought to equip members with tools to intervene in real time, model care-centered leadership, and foster a culture of safety and respect on set by providing practical examples of what harm can look like in the workplace and discussing the complex considerations around intervention. The participants were also challenged to reflect on their behavior while learning tangible ways to intervene in harmful situations such as the five D’s – Direct, Distract, Delay, Delegate, and Document.
