The Latino Committee (LC) meeting on May 28 was preceded by the panel discussion, The Director’s Voice: A Conversation with Director Steven Canals. In a conversation moderated by LC Co-Chair SJ Main Muñoz, Canals discussed the necessity of a comprehensive understanding of story, the value of experience and the relentless pursuit of it, and the advantage of a Director’s distinctive voice.
“I think it’s essential we know what’s most critically important to us,” said Canals when speaking about developing his Director’s voice. “I know my first commitment is to black and brown folks, to queer folks, and — as an Afro-Puerto Rican queer person — to uplift those communities. So, I’m not going to compromise those values when it comes to the work. I look for projects highlighting themes that are really important to me, such as liberation, found family, and resilience.”
