On February 19 and April 2, DGA members and trainees attended the in-person course, DGA Firearms Safety Training. Hosted by the Guild in conjunction with the Assistant Director Training Plan of New York, these invitation-only sessions focused on safety concerns and procedures for the use of prop firearms on set, while allowing the production to achieve the desired visual effects.
The hands-on training was held at the I.A.T.S.E. Local 52 Union Hall in Astoria, New York, and was led by instructors Steve Genna and Joel Tarantino, who covered topics including: protection of cast, crew and equipment; best practices for rehearsals and on-set communication; the mechanics of common firearms; ammunition used on set; shell ejection patterns and compliance with local, state and federal laws.
