That crazy guy from Kazakhstan is back to wreak more havoc on the unsuspecting mighty in Director Jason Woliner’s comedy, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
In the follow-up to the 2006 hit, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, Woliner’s film finds our titular hero back on U.S. soil after he is released from prison for bringing shame to his country. With a new mission in place, he risks life and limb when he returns to America with his 15-year-old daughter.
On January 14, Woliner discussed the making of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm in an online conversation moderated by moderated by Director Phil Lord (22 Jump Street).
During the discussion, he spoke about directing performance in an improvisational comedy.
“We say improv, but we know this is a comedy and a very big comedy with a lot of big set pieces and shocking scenes,” said Woliner. “But the core of it has to be real and it has to feel real on screen, but also, of course, you have to come off like a real person to the actual real person you’re with who thinks you’re real.”
Woliner’s other directorial credits include the television specials Aziz Ansari: Dangerously Delicious and Patton Oswalt: My Weakness Is Strong; episodes of What We Do in the Shadows, The Last Man on Earth, New Girl, Parks and Recreation, Funny or Die Presents... and Human Giant; and the television documentary series Nathan for You. He was also nominated for a 2010 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing in a Children’s Series for The Electric Company (Shared with Nadine Zylstra and Ryan McFaul). Woliner has been a DGA member since 2006.
