On June 16th, 153 golfers and 52 tennis players took part in the 18th Annual Howard W. Koch Memorial DGA Foundation Golf Tournament, and the 11th Annual DGA Foundation Tennis Tournament. Both events were fundraisers created to benefit the Directors Guild Foundation (DGF), a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting DGA members facing difficult times.
The golf tournament and the awards reception were held at the Wilshire Country Club, which was founded in 1919 and has hosted many great tournaments and groups such as the LA Open, the Senior PGA and the LPGA. The tennis tournament took place right around the corner at the Los Angeles Tennis Club, home of champions since 1921.
“Whether your sporting pleasure today was golf or tennis, I hope that everyone had a great time on the courts and fairways today – and all for the best of reasons – supporting the Directors Guild Foundation in its critical efforts to assist DGA members in need,” said DGA First Vice President Betty Thomas in thanking all the players for their participation. She also acknowledged the service of Golf Tournament Co-Chairs Mel Damski and Michael Zinberg, and Tennis Tournament Co-Chairs Howard Storm and Gil Cates Jr. in making these tournaments possible. Then she turned the podium over to Zinberg, who spoke about the history and work of the Foundation, and announced that due to the generosity of the tournaments’ participants more than $50,000 had been raised.
Zinberg also thanked the tournaments’ gold, silver and bronze sponsors, before proceeding to hand out the raffle prizes and announcing the winners of the “Own Ball” golf tournament. Next, Tennis Tournament Co-Chair Cates stepped to the podium to announce the winners of all three flights of the tennis tournament; then Zinberg returned to announce the winners of the Scramble golf tournament and invite all the players to return next year for the DGA Foundation Golf and Tennis tournaments scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2015.
