On June 17, 137 golfers and 56 tennis players took part in the Seventeenth Annual Howard W. Koch Memorial DGA Foundation Golf Tournament, and the Tenth Annual DGA Foundation Tennis Tournament. Both events were fundraisers created to benefit the Directors Guild Foundation (DGF), a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting DGA members facing difficult times.
The golf tournament – renamed in 2001 in honor of former DGF Chair Howard W. Koch – and the awards reception were held at the Wilshire Country Club, which was founded in 1919 and has hosted many great tournaments and groups such as the LA Open, the Senior PGA and the LPGA. The tennis tournament took place right around the corner at the Los Angeles Tennis Club, home of champions since 1921.
DGA First Vice President Paris Barclay thanked all the players for their participation and acknowledged the work of Golf Tournament Co-Chairs Mel Damski and Michael Zinberg, and Tennis Tournament Co-Chairs Howard Storm and Gil Cates Jr. He turned the podium over to DGF Treasurer Cleve Landsberg, who announced that due to the generosity or the participants, more than $50,000 had been raised on behalf of the Foundation. Then Golf Tournament Co-Chair Mel Damski and Tennis Tournament Co-Chairs Howard Storm and Gil Cates Jr. thanked all the supporters of both tournaments including: DGA National Executive Director Jay D. Roth; the Wilshire Country Club; the Los Angeles Tennis Club; the USTA’s Annette Buck who served as the tennis tournament’s director; and the tournaments’ gold, silver and bronze sponsors, before proceeding to hand out the raffle prizes and announce the winners of the golf and tennis tournaments.

Koch Memorial DGA Golf Tournament consisted of a morning "Own-Ball" competition with players competing for first, second and third places in the categories of “Best Gross Score” and “Best Net Score” and an afternoon Scramble format with each team of golfers playing the group's “best ball.” |
