2011 Film Independent Forum

The 2011 Film Independent Forum (FIND) was held at the DGA's Los Angeles theater complex from October 21-23. Presented by indieWIRE ‑ a news, information and networking site for the independent film community ‑ the theme for the weekend event was "It’s All About Control" and featured panels that addressed all aspects of low-budget independent filmmaking.

In addition to the Guild serving as both the venue and a sponsor, DGA members also participated in several panel discussions.

Director Werner Herzog (Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Grizzly Man) delivered the keynote address then answered filmmaking questions from the audience during a Q&A moderated by Stephen Galloway of The Hollywood Reporter.

Directors Mark and Michael Polish (Twin Falls Idaho) participated in the panel Anatomy of a Release: Distribution Case Studies, where they spoke about proven strategies for distribution success with writer/director/producer Marc Fienberg (Play the Game) in a conversation moderated by indieWIRE’s Editor-in-Chief Dana Harris.

Director Ondi Timoner (We Live in Public) was a panelist on DIY Route: The Theatrical Roadshow and discussed the do-it-yourself path to theatrical releasing with Shotwell Media’s Sasha Berman, Laemmle Theatres’ Greg Laemmle and Dada Films’ MJ Peckos in a conversation moderated by Required Viewing’s Steven Raphael.

Directors Nicole Holofcener (Parks and Recreation), Patty Jenkins (The Killing), Jeremy Podeswa (Boardwalk Empire), and Don Roos (Happy Endings) served as panelists for In-D-TV: Storytelling Inside of the Box, a discussion of the mark that feature film directors are making in broadcast and cable television moderated by Director Alan Poul (Six Feet Under).

And Directors Karyn Kusama, (Jennifer’s Body) and Angela Robinson (The L Word) took the stage with writer/directors Jacob Aaron Estes (Mean Creek) and Jill Sprecher (Clockwatchers) for Breaking In: What’s Next?, where they revealed how they made the transition from their passion-driven solo projects to the next level of filmmaking in a conversation moderated by indieWIRE’s Dana Harris.
