Exploring Opportunities in Documentary Films

On February 8, following their monthly meeting at the DGA’s Los Angeles headquarters, the Women’s Steering Committee hosted the panel discussion “Exploring Opportunities in Documentary Films” with directors Judith Vogelsang (Shades of LA) Shari Cookson (Skinheads USA: Soldiers of the Race War) and 8 Star Entertainment President Cida Goncalves.

The panel engaged in an illuminating discussion about opportunities in documentary filmmaking, as well as the “ins and outs” of the documentary experience. They also revealed how they used documentaries as the springboard to their careers in dramatic television and feature films, and how thinking on your feet and the impromptu nature of documentary projects translates well in today’s fast-paced production atmosphere. The conversation was moderated by 1st AD Lucille OuYang (Public Enemies) and director Kathy Skiles (Official Film of the 1984 Olympics).
