DGA members in New York were treated to the German version of the classic crime thriller during the Eastern Region Special Projects Committee's Global Cinema screening of director Baran bo Odar's The Silence on November 15.
In Odar's screen adaptation of a bestselling crime thriller novel, a small town is thrown into turmoil when a 13-year-old girl vanishes on a hot summer night and her bicycle is found in the exact place where another girl was killed 23 years earlier. Echoing the work of Hitchcock, The Silence creates a mood of genuine horror while carefully avoiding explicit violence. The critically-acclaimed film was screened at Cannes, as well as the Munich Film Festival and the Locarno Film Festival in Toronto.
After the screening, Odar (Unter der Sonne) discussed the making of The Silence with Director Debbie Elbin (Apologies to Buñuel).
