16th Annual DGA Student Film Awards in Los Angeles and New York

DGA members and their guests attended ceremonies for the 16th Annual DGA Student Film Awards at the DGA Theater complex in Los Angeles on November 10, and the DGA Theater in New York on November 30. The Awards are designed to honor, encourage and bring attention to outstanding African American, Asian American, Latino and Women Filmmakers in film schools and select universities across the country.

The Los Angeles ceremony began with a welcome message and introductions by DGA Past President Gene Reynolds and Gail Duncan of Awards sponsor Eastman Kodak. Then Director Chris Tashima presented the awards to the Asian American student filmmakers, Director Pablo Ferro presented the awards to the Latino filmmakers, Director Mary Lou Belli presented the awards to the Women filmmakers, and Director Abdul Malik Abbott presented the awards to the African American filmmakers.

Director Laura Belsey presided over the ceremonies in New York, with Director Ted Bogosian presenting the awards to the Jury Award recipients, Director Lee Daniels presenting the awards to the African American and Asian American category winners, and Director Marilyn Agrelo presenting the awards to the Latino and Women category winners.

The winners of each category received a prize of $2,500 from the DGA. The winners were selected by blue ribbon panels comprised of DGA members and each of the winning films was screened before the awards ceremony.
