Fade Out: A Conversation on Final Scenes

On October 19, the Independent Directors Committee West (IDCw) hosted a special discussion in DGA Theater 2 in Los Angeles. Entitled Fade Out: A Conversation on Final Scenes, the evening was an exploration of how the film's conclusion was originally conceived, organically evolved and eventually completed with directors Miguel Arteta, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.

Following a welcome from IDCw Chair Stephen Gyllenhaal, Arteta, Dayton and Faris took the stage for a lively conversation about getting to the end. Using the final scenes of Arteta's Youth in Revolt and Dayton and Faris' 2005 DGA Award-nominated Little Miss Sunshine as examples, the trio illustrated their process by showing heretofore unseen clips and telling stories of how they arrived at their respective finish lines.

Arteta has been a DGA member since 1998, and Dayton and Faris joined the DGA in 1996. The IDC consists of Michael Apted, Jamie Babbit, Charles Burnett, Patricia Cardoso, Nick Cassavetes, Lisa Cholodenko, Christopher Coppola, Tamra Davis, Jonathan Dayton, Raymond DeFelitta, Valerie Faris, Rodrigo Garcia, Catherine Hardwicke, Jake Kasdan, Rick King, Neil LaBute, Mary Lambert, Elias Mehrige, Mark Pellington, Jason Reitman, Mark Romanek, Bobby Roth, David O. Russell, Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Penelope Spheeris, Michael Uno, and Robert Young.
