Film Independent's Filmmakers Forum 2010

Film Independent's Filmmaker Forum (FIND) was held at the DGA's Los Angeles theater complex from October 29-31. The theme for the weekend event was "Now it's up to you," and featured panels that addressed all aspects of low-budget independent filmmaking.

In addition to the Guild serving as both the venue and a sponsor, FIND opened with a screening of DGA member Doug Liman's politically charged thriller Fair Game, followed by a Q&A moderated by screenwriter John August.

DGA members also spoke at the FIND luncheon and participated in three panel discussions. Director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) appeared with producers Michael Costigan, Jamie Patricof, and Celine Rattray on the panel Evaluate Your Project For Today's Marketplace, a look at how some filmmakers have creatively assembled their financing in today's economy, moderated by Impact Partners Executive Director Dan Cogan. Director Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) was part of the panel Genre Films: Case Studies, an exploration of commercially viable vehicles that can be made for relatively low cost, with producer Effie T. Brown, writer/director Ti West, and moderated by Film Independent's Associate Director of Programming Doug Jones. Documentary: Legal Update had director Marina Zenovich (Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired); Jack Lerner, Clinical Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the Intellectual Property and Technology Law Clinic at USC; International Documentary Association President Eddie Schmidt, and entertainment attorney Michael C. Donaldson explaining some of the common legal issues faced by documentary filmmakers.
