Budgeting: Theory and Practice

On October 23, the Eastern AD/UPM Council presented Budgeting: Theory and Practice in the boardroom of the DGA offices in New York. The seminar explored all aspects of budgeting for film and television and featured UPMs and other experts who shared how they develop budgets for pre-production, production, post-production, and visual effects.

The day was divided into two sessions. The the morning event was a discussion on tax incentives and applying fringes and other related topics moderated by Eastern AD/UPM Council member Trish Adlesic (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit). The panelists were UPMs Scott Ferguson (Temple Grandin) and Harvey Waldman (Mildred Pierce), Post Production Supervisor Jennifer Lane (Taking Woodstock) and Entertainment Partners' Vice President of East Coast Marketing & Sales Rich Guay. Given the expertise of the panelists, a substantial amount of useful information was dispensed to the members in attendance in a short period of time.

Guay also led the afternoon session, a hands-on tutorial on developing a budget using budgeting software.
