Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams

On October 13, DGA members in Los Angeles were transported deep into the bowels of the earth via a special screening of Director Werner Herzog’s new documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams. The feature film, shot in 3D, was a special co-presentation of the DGA Special Projects Committee’s Documentary Series and Global Cinema Series.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams takes us into the subterranean wonderland of the Chauvet Caves of southwestern France. These caverns are home to the earliest known paintings made by man. The 3D presentation vibrantly brought to life Paleolithic images created over 30,000 years ago and revealed incredible details of the astonishing setting where they have been preserved.

After the screening, 2005 DGA Documentary Award-winner Herzog (Grizzly Man) discussed challenges of making Cave of Forgotten Dreams with Documentary Series Sub-Committee Chair Chuck Workman (Precious Images). Herzog’s other works include the dramatic features Aguirre: The Wrath of God, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, Nosferatu the Vampyre, Fitzcarraldo, Invincible, Rescue Dawn, and the Academy Award-nominated documentary Encounters at the End of the World. Herzog joined the DGA in 2006.
