Documentary Series Screens "The English Surgeon"

On June 23, the Documentary Series screened director Geoffrey Smith's 2009 DGA Award-nominated film The English Surgeon in the Guild's Los Angeles Theatre. The film won Best International Documentary Awards at the Hot Docs, Silver Docs and Shanghai Film Festivals.

The film follows Dr. Henry Marsh - one of London's foremost brain surgeons - who travels to the Ukraine every year to diagnose patients, train doctors, and perform high-risk surgeries in a former KGB hospital full of makeshift medical equipment.

After the screening, Smith, who was in New York, discussed the making of The English Surgeon with Documentary Series Sub-Committee Chair Chuck Workman (Precious Images), who was onstage in Los Angeles by way of a SKYPE connection.
