Directing Workshop with Bethany Rooney

The Women's Steering Committee (WSC) hosted a directing workshop at Guild headquarters in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 8. The all-day event featured Director Bethany Rooney, who has taught directing workshops at UCLA Extension, Trinity University and Stephens College.

Taking a practical approach, Rooney gave the class a rundown of the process of directing from the first cold look at the script, to working with actors, to blocking and taping a scene and assessing its success. The other subjects covered included surviving set politics and a wider look at the craft of filmmaking.

Rooney's credits include more than 150 episodes of prime-time network dramas and comedies of shows such as Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill, as well as four pilots and eight television movies. She has been a member of the DGA since 1985.
