On April 29, 2010, following the membership screening of his latest feature, The City of Your Final Destination, the DGA East Coast Special Projects Committee hosted a special Q&A with 1995 DGA Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient James Ivory, director of such iconic films as A Room with a View, The Remains of the Day and The White Countess.
Ivory's film tells the story of a young Iranian-American doctoral student who has won a grant to write a biography of a celebrated Uruguayan novelist. But before he can proceed he must persuade the reluctant heirs to give him the authorization to do so.
After the screening, Mr. Ivory was joined onstage by East Coast Special Projects Committee Chair Raymond DeFelitta (City Island) who moderated the discussion about the making of the film. Ivory and DeFelitta discussed the casting process; how Ivory assembled his remarkable cast that included Sir Anthony Hopkins, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Laura Linney; the wonderful character of the Argentine location mansion; and the challenges of raising money for independent films.
