Navigating the Business and Advancing Your Career

On Tuesday, March 9, DGA Members gathered in the Guild's Los Angeles boardroom for the Women's Steering Committee's (WSC) panel discussion Navigating the Business and Advancing Your Career, following the Committee's monthly meeting.

The panelists and moderators explored winning strategies for breaking into the industry by discussing how they did so themselves, detailing the pitfalls they faced and the help they received. The panelists were DGA Western UPM/AD Council Second Vice Chair Marie Cantin, a producer on films such as The Waterdance, Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead, and A Night At the Roxbury, and mentor of second year thesis projects at the American Film Institute; Producer/UPM Janet Knutsen who has worked on series such as Boston Legal, The Practice and NYPD Blue, and features such as Wolf, Postcards From the Edge and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey; and Western UPM/AD Council member/1st AD Tracey Smith Baumert who has worked as a DGA Director, 1st AD, Stage Manager, Associate Director and Production Coordinator on over 150 shows in almost every genre including: feature films, sitcoms, daytime dramas, live variety shows, reality programs, news and sporting events. The discussion was moderated by WSC member Sandra Milliner (RoboDoc) and WSC Co-Chair/2nd AD Carrie Rudolf (Mad Men).
