On Saturday, February 27, the Executive Committee of the San Francisco Coordinating Committee (SFCC) hosted the seminar Sound Production for Motion Pictures & Television. Held at Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco, the all-day event featured a highly educational exploration of sound for film and television via conversations with several experts in the field.
After a welcome and introductions by SFCC Education Committee Chair Jana Spotts, SFCC Chair Tim Boxell moderated a series of conversations that began with Production Sound Mixer Nelson Stoll, winner of an Emmy Award for his work on the movie for television Son of the Morning Star. Stoll explained the facts of his area of expertise and was followed by Composer Todd Boekelheide, winner of the "Best Sound" Oscar for Amadeus, who used this occasion to discuss the art of adding the music. Next came Todd's brother, Sound Editor Jay Boekelheide, winner of the Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing Oscar for his work on The Right Stuff, and covered the subject of sound mixing and editing. The Egg Show - a highly entertaining 90-minute non-technical demonstration of the artistic uses of sound on film - was presented by Dolby Sound Pioneer Ioan Allen. The discussions concluded with Dolby Production Services' Senior Engineer Dan Sperry who explained the world film sound and Dolby Broadcast Technical Marketing Director Roland Vlaicu who did the same for rapidly evolving world of broadcast sound.
After the separate discussions, Boxell led all the panelists in a Q&A where they fielded questions from the DGA-member audience.
