On Saturday, November 7, 2009, the DGA's Ethnic Diversity Steering Committee (EDSC) hosted a Master Class Series focusing on directing episodic television.
The full day invitation only event was held at the Guild's New York office and featured content designed to improve the knowledge and skills of the ethnically diverse and female members who attended. The classes were led by prominent episodic directors and focused on a wide range of subject matter particular to the craft of directing episodic television, such as working with the script, selecting locations, the editing process, and working with actors.
After introducing the event, DGA First Vice President Paris Barclay (Glee; In Treatment; Cold Case) taught the first session that covered "The Seven Habits of Highly Successful Directors." Director Sam Weisman (Monk; In Plain Sight; The Bernie Mac Show) followed with "What Do You Actually Do When You Direct?" DGA Sixth Vice President Vince Misiano (Medium; Crash; Eli Stone) tackled the subject of "Directing: The Significant Others" where he spoke about working with producers, writers and other production crew. After a break for lunch, Director Jace Alexander (Warehouse 13; Royal Pains; Burn Notice) covered "The Prep Process: Script, Casting, Locations." The day concluded with Director Martha Mitchell's (Law & Order; Without a Trace; NCIS) class on "Turning Words into Pictures: Directing Network Episodic Television." This master class also enabled the attendees to received personalized instruction as each of the teaching directors fielded questions at the end of their session.
