Directing Series Seminar: Directing for Professionals

On Saturday, June 20, the DGA Special Projects Committee presented the fourth installment in its educational series "Directing for Professionals" with the seminar Wait 'til We Add the Music! This series is designed to provide practical "how to" skills and techniques to give directors the basics to work productively with their creative teams.

Following an introduction by DGA Past President/Special Projects Directing for Professionals Subcommittee chair Gene Reynolds (M*A*S*H, Lou Grant), members in the Los Angeles Headquarters Boardroom heard an expert panel of directors and composers explore subjects ranging from the function of music in a film to how much should you tell the composer before he composes.

The panel featured DGA Third Vice President Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman; Ray), DGA director-members Michael Schultz (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band; Carwash) and Kevin Sullivan (How Stella Got Her Groove Back; 30 Rock); composer Lee Holdridge (Moonlighting; Splash) and actor/composer John Rubinstein (Jeremiah Johnson; China Beach), who discussed a variety of subjects pertaining to the musical composition process for film and television. DGA director-member Arthur Seidelman (By Dawn's Early Light; Magnum P.I.) served as moderator.

Upcoming sessions in this series are slated to feature discussions on what directors need to know about performance, virtual sets, and editing.
