The Art of the Meeting - A Day of Education and Inspiration

On Saturday, May 9, the DGA Inter-Committee and the Diversity Task Force sponsored the seminar, "The Art of the Meeting" in the boardroom of the Guild's Los Angeles headquarters. The all-day event was designed to educate women and ethnic minority members of the Guild about the skills needed to obtain employment in episodic television.

The DGA Inter-Committee is comprised of the Guild's African American Steering Committee, Asian American Committee, Latino Committee and Women's Steering Committee. Inter-Committee member Millicent Shelton and DGA First Vice-President Paris Barclay welcomed the participants to the seminar that presented panel discussions on a variety of subjects.

The opening discussion was entitled "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly... Interview" featured DGA director-members Allan Arkush (Heroes), Kevin Hooks (Bones), Ian Sander (Ghost Whisperer), Executive Producer Carol Mendelsohn (CSI: Miami), Executive Vice President of Programming for Sony Pictures Television Jeanie Bradley and Senior Vice President of John Wells Productions Chris Selak in a conversation that identified the essential tools needed to navigate industry meetings. The panel was moderated by Broder/ICM director's agent Paul Alan Smith.

Next came the discussion "The Candidate... On Set" where DGA director-members Carlos Avila (Cold Case), Janice Cooke Leonard (Gossip Girl), Jonathan Kaplan (The Accused), Tawnia McKiernan (Monk) and Jay Torres (Desperate Housewives) covered the subject of shadowing protocols for directors with moderator Paris Barclay (In Treatment).

After a lunch-networking period in the DGA Atrium, the seminar resumed with the discussion "Wag the Dog... the Guest Director" with DGA director-members Todd Holland (Malcolm in the Middle), Eric Laneuville (Eureka), Linda Mendoza (Chasing Papi), Babu Subramaniam (One Tree Hill), Jessica Yu (Grey's Anatomy) and 1st AD Kevin Williams (House, M.D.), exploring the political and social dynamics visiting directors may encounter on the set. Emmy award-winning writer/producer Stephen J. Cannell (The Rockford Files) moderated the discussion.

The final panel of the day was "The Aviator... Pilot Directors" and featured DGA director-members Ken Kwapis (The Office), Mimi Leder (The Code), David Nutter (Supernatural), David Semel (The Cleaner) and Ted Wass (Rules of Engagement) discussing the art of directing pilots from the pitch to the director's cut. DGA Board Alternate member Rod Holcomb (Lost) served as moderator.
