The Business of Being a Director

On Tuesday, November 11, the DGA Eastern Directors Council (EDC) presented another of its series of seminars focusing on women and designed to provide directors with vital information about the industry.

The Business of Being A Director featured a special panel discussion on the challenges and strategies of the business side of a director's decision-making process. The panelists included entertainment attorney George Sheanshang; agent Lucy Stille from Paradigm; Director Victor Nelli, Jr. (Ugly Betty; Everybody Hates Chris); and Director Patricia Rozema (Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, Mansfield Park).

Following and introduction by EDC member Linda Laundra, the panelists shared their unique insights on a range of subjects including the qualities of a successful director, advice on choosing projects, not waiting for an assignment but developing your own projects, the necessity of collaboration, and the importance of having and maintaining relationships with other craftspeople and talent. In addition they noted new media as an emerging avenue of distribution. They also discussed directors' reels and the interview process. Director Nancy Savoca (Dirt, The 24 Hour Woman) served as moderator.
