On Wednesday, November 12, the Asian American Committee (AAC) is hosted a special screening of Wrestling with Angels: Playwright Tony Kushner, the latest documentary by DGA Award-nominated and Academy Award-winning director Freida Lee Mock (Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision) in the DGA's Los Angeles theatre complex.
Mock's new film is an intimate portrait of Kushner, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning author of Angels in America, who is not only one of the great playwrights of our time, but a committed and passionate social activist. Wrestling with Angels also features appearances by many of Kushner's collaborators who talk about working with the writer on both stage and screen including: Academy Award-winning actresses Marcia Gay Harden, Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson; and DGA Award-winning directors George C. Wolfe and Mike Nichols, who won the 2003 DGA Award for the miniseries version of Angels in America.
Following the screening and an introduction by AAC Co-Chair Director Sandy Tung (Saving Shiloh), Mock spoke briefly about the making of the film and the challenges of documentary filmmaking. Mock has been a member of the DGA since 2000.
