Cinematography for Motion Pictures

On Saturday, October 11, Bay area DGA members gathered in San Rafael at Kerner Optical’s Building C Theater for the 6-hour program Cinematography for Motion Pictures. Organized by the Executive Committee of the San Francisco Coordinating Committee (SFCC) the seminar featured in-depth discussion and analysis of the art of Cinematography as well as a look to the future with the RED 1 and Sony EX-1 HD cameras and how their images compare to those of film cameras.

Illustrated via projected samples of reels and examples of works in progress using the latest HD cameras, the seminar was broken into several parts. The first featured SFCC Executive Committee member and veteran DP Hiro Narita, who offered insights on his approach to lighting and composing images.

Next came DGA director-member Joseph Murray, who is also an IA 600 member and usually both directs and lights his projects. Murray had a lot to say on the changing face of the art of cinematography and brought with him a team of HD experts — DP Art Adams and Camera Technicians Adam Welker and Tim Blackmore — who demonstrated the range and limitations of the Red 1 and EX-1 cameras. Rounding out the seminar were DP Don Matthew Smith, who has shot countless commercials on HD, and Kerner Optical’s Fred Meyers who discussed the impact of HD on the art of Cinematography.

The seminar was moderated by SFCC Education Subcommittee Chair Gino Caputi.
