On August 5, The DGA Asian American Committee presented An Evening with Director Wayne Wang (The Joy Luck Club, The Center of the World, Because of Winn-Dixie) in DGA Theatre 2 in Los Angeles. The evening included a screening of Wang’s new film A Thousand Years of Good Prayers.
Based on the award-winning short story by Yiyun Lee, the film tells the story of a recently widowed Chinese father who travels to America on a mission to see his estranged daughter remarry after a 12-year separation and her recent divorce. He finds himself in a clash of cultures and unresolved issues when she dates a Russian emigre and he is drawn to an Iranian woman who captures his heart despite their language barrier.
After the screening, Wang discussed the making of the film with DGA Director member Michael Kang (The Motel, West 32nd), who had also previously worked with him as the Second Unit Director on Because of Winn-Dixie.
