On Saturday, July 12, 2008, The DGA African American Steering Committee (AASC) presented the roundtable conversation Fulfilling the Director’s Vision – A Focus on the Second Unit, following their monthly committee meeting.
Director Ernest Dickerson (Lincoln Heights, The 4400); Second Unit Directors William Washington (Leprechaun in the Hood, Tara) and Julius LeFlore, (Waist Deep, Chasing Papi); 1st AD/Visual Effects Specialist Susan Zwerman (Fat Albert, Around the World in 80 Days); 1st AD Sandra Middleton (Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Family); and Stunt Coordinator Amanda LeFlore (Stranger Inside, Foolish) discussed the communication, coordination and political challenges that arise with Second Units. The panel also shared their insights on how to budget effectively, schedule and safely achieve major stunt and special effects sequences. AASC Co-Chair Van Hayden served as moderator for the conversation.
