Global Cinema Series Screens Oscar-winning film from Austria, "The Counterfeiters"

Providing another chance for DGA members to view films from cultures around the world, on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, the Special Projects Committee presented another screening in its Global Cinema Series. The evening’s selection was a film from Austria, The Counterfeiters (Die Fälscher), written and directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky.

Based on a true story, The Counterfeiters chronicles the moral dilemma faced by concentration camp prisoners when they are ordered to use their skills to create counterfeit currency. The prisoners must choose to either cooperate with the enemy and survive as first-class prisoners in a “golden cage” or sabotage the operation and face certain death. The Counterfeiters won the 2008 Academy Award® for Best Foreign-Language Film.

Following the screening, Director Stefan Ruzowitzky took part in a discussion about the making of the film, moderated by Global Cinema Sub-Committee Co-Chair Victoria Hochberg.
