Following a reception, the audience gathered in the DGA Theater to learn about new 3D production and post-production techniques by viewing cutting-edge 3D footage and discussing the directorial craft as it relates to storytelling in 3D. Cameron, who has been developing the medium for nearly a decade, discussed the work that went into creating the new equipment and techniques that is allowing him to film his upcoming feature Avatar in “stereo” as he prefers to call the process. Spielberg spoke about applying those same methods to upcoming trio of features he is creating with Director Peter Jackson based on the popular Belgian comic-strip Tintin. Katzenberg discussed the advances in digital projection and the scheduled proliferation of upgraded exhibition venues that will allow the distribution of 3D films to wider audiences.
Following the presentation, the panel opened the floor to questions from the directors that covered everything from the nuts and bolts of the techniques needed to film in 3D, to the aesthetic choices directors will face as they step into this advancing medium.
