member screenings followed by Q&As with the films’ directors.
Bill Condon: Dreamgirls
In the DGA's Los Angeles theatre, Director Bill Condon revealed secrets of how he brought to the silver screen the Broadway musical about a trio of black female soul singers who cross over to the pop charts in the early 1960s. DGA Special Projects Committee member Randal Kleiser (Grease) served as moderator.
Alfonso Cuarón: Children of Men
Director Alfonso Cuarón was joined onstage in Los Angeles by moderator Luis Mandoki (When a Man Loves A Woman) to discuss his futuristic film about the human race on the edge of extinction due to an inability to reproduce.
Marc Forster: Stranger Than Fiction
Director Marc Forster discussed his comedy about a man who finds his life hijacked when his reality begins to be created by a novelist who's planning to kill him with the audience in Los Angeles. DGA Board Member/Special Projects Committee Chair Jeremy Kagan served as moderator.
Roger Michell: Venus
The New York audience got to hear director Roger Michell discuss his comedic drama about a pair of retired actors whose lives are sent into upheaval by the visit of one's young niece. Director David Jones (Ghost Whisperer) served as moderator.
Gabriele Muccino: The Pursuit of Happyness
Director Gabriele Muccino entertained the Los Angeles audience with behind-the-scenes tales of the making of his film about a struggling salesman who must find a way to balance fatherhood and his dream of a better life via an internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm. Director Penelope Spheeris (The Kid & I) served as moderator.
Steven Soderbergh: The Good German
Director Steven Soderbergh spoke to audiences both in Los Angeles and New York to reveal the making of his WWII era film about an American military journalist is drawn into a murder investigation involving both his former mistress and his driver in post-war Berlin. Director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) served as moderator in New York and director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) served as moderator in Los Angeles.
Irwin Winkler: Home of the Brave
Director Irwin Winkler also appeared before audiences both in Los Angeles and New York to discuss his film about soldiers who struggle to readjust to life at home after a lengthy tour of duty in Iraq. Actor/director Barry Primus ("V.I.P.") served as moderator in both locations.
Edward Zwick: Blood Diamond
Director Edward Zwick spoke to the Los Angeles audience about his socially charged adventure drama regarding a fisherman and a mercenary who attempt to get a priceless diamond out of war torn Sierra Leone. Director Steve Zaillian (All the King's Men) served as moderator.
