An Evening with Andy Garcia

On Thursday, March 23, 2006 The DGA Latino Committee hosted an evening with actor/director Andy Garcia, featuring a special screening of his feature directing debut, The Lost City, in the DGA Theatre One in Los Angeles.

The Lost City is a historical and romantic tribute to Garcia’s native Cuba, written by acclaimed novelist, Guillermo Cabrera Infante. Garcia also stars in the film as Fico Fellove, the owner of El Tropico, Havana’s classiest nightclub. Set against the backdrop of 1958 as the revolutionary forces of Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara prepare to overthrow dictator Fulgencio Batista, Fico struggles to hold together his family and the love of a woman, not knowing that his club will become more than just a stage for popular entertainment.

Following the screening, Garcia participated in a discussion with DGA Director member Ricardo Méndez Matta, who also served as his First Assistant Director on The Lost City. Garcia recalled one of his most memorable experiences was working with Francis Ford Coppola on The Godfather III. “I went into the movie as an actor and left a filmmaker,” said Garcia.

Garcia made his directorial debut with the documentary, Cachao... Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos (Like His Rhythm There Is No Other), a concert film about the co-creator of the Mambo, bassist Israel Lopez “Cachao.” He joined the DGA in 2004.
